The Difference Between Office Renovation, Reconfiguration, and Redesign. What’s Right for Your Space?

The modern office space should be clean, safe, and have all the amenities to support employee productivity. If you feel like your space is lacking in one of these areas, it may be time to update your office design.

You may have heard the words, reconfiguration, redesign, and renovation used interchangeably. However, there is a difference between the three, and knowing the distinction may help you determine which method would best help you to improve your space.

Read on to discover the difference between office renovation, reconfiguration, and redesign to help you with your next project.

Office Reconfiguration

An office reconfiguration revolves around moving the aesthetic features of your space. It is meant to change the shape or formation of your office and is useful for those looking to get the most out of their current resources.

As workers come back into the office, many workplaces are utilizing this technique to reconfigure office furniture in an attempt to reduce density and increase the physical distance between workspaces.

This technique can also be used to create an open work environment by removing cubicles, buying new office furniture, and adding in adjustable walls or barriers.

Office Redesign

An office redesign is used to change the appearance, function, or equipment of office space. This type of upgrade is useful when your workspace no longer meets the needs of your employees or isn’t being used efficiently.

This is also a great technique to use when you want to update dated furnishings and finishes. Think of a redesign as bringing life back into the space and creating a modern, more appealing workplace.

Some ways you can redesign your office are by changing the lighting scheme, repainting, or upgrading finishes throughout the office. Partnering with the right contractor who can get the job done is useful for these types of projects.

Office Renovation

An office renovation is designed to refresh and revive the workplace by transforming the interior of an office while leaving the exterior in tack. This type of project requires in-depth construction and may require you and your employees to leave the space while the transformation occurs.

Office renovations are best for those who need more significant changes than reconfiguration or redesign projects can offer. An office renovation can include a wide scope of services such as installing new countertops, storage space, conference rooms, carpeting, and much more. It’s typically the most expensive option. However, investing in a renovation can improve the space greatly and pay off in the long run.

  • Great information David. One I would hope the clients PM, architect or broker would discuss prior to them making their decision to move or stay in their existing space. AO should be at the table when this is being discussed. You would be surprised of how many Brokers do not know the difference in the terminology of these three little words.

  • I appreciate that you explained the importance of having a workspace that will have a space for more productivity. My uncle mentioned to me last night that they are planning to build a commercial project on their vacant site, and he asked if I have any idea what is the best option to do. Thanks to this informative article, I’ll be sure to tell him that it will be much better if we consult a trusted commercial construction company as they can answer all his inquiries.
